The Big Bang Theory.

The Big Bang Theory is now on it's fifth season and I'm pleased to say that it is still going strong and I haven't seen a regurgitated story line or joke yet. A lot of people seem to dislike The Big Bang Theory claiming that it is neither funny nor worth watching but I strongly disagree with this. For one, this show has won countless awards. In 2009, the comedy was voted best comedy series at the TCA awards and in 2010, the show was voted favourite comedy at the People's Choice Awards. Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper, has won numerous awards for his role in the show including the award for individual achievement at the TCA awards, a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical, and another Emmy award for Best actor in a comedy series. In my opinion, that says it all.

The characters may all be nerds but they are all very different individuals and it shows you that you can be clever and lead a normal life just like everyone else. Okay, so not quite like everyone else, but y'know the general life structure is the same. I don't think you have to be particularly intellectual to understand the jokes in The Big Bang Theory, but I can see why certain people who may not be interested in or have a decent knowledge of science may find this show hard to follow. I actually learn quite a lot from this show as you pick up on the nerd-related banter between the characters and it's sort of like learning without meaning to which is great!

Sheldon's mother comes to visit
There was an interesting turn of events at the end of the last series when Penny sleeps with Raj - very unexpected. With Priya (Raj's sister) moving back to India, I had hoped that perhaps Penny and Leonard would get together again, but this event slightly complicates things. Things aren't going well for Bernadette and Howard as Bernadette earns her PhD, meaning that Howard is the only member of the group who is not a doctor. Things are very rocky at the beginning of season five as Howard finds out Raj has been dreaming about his fiancée and Leonard  is obviously peeved at the fact Raj slept with his ex-girlfriend. Penny, deciding that her relationship with the guys is probably now over, decides to move back to Nebraska, but after getting cast in a Haemorrhoids advertisement, she decides to stay. Meanwhile, Sheldon has been made captain of the paintball team; however, things are very tense between everyone given the 'Penny' situation. It is later revealed that Penny and Raj didn't sleep together as Raj ejaculated prematurely (typical), and this is cause for celebration for just about..  everyone. I don't think this was the funniest start to the series that it could have been; however, there was lots of awkwardness between the friends that needed to be overcome first. Thankfully the following episodes were back to their usual level of hilarity.

Sheldon and Leonard think about starting a sword collection
This season I would hope to see more of the Penny/Leonard relationship and whether or not the pair actually still have feelings for each other. Sheldon's character is probably the one who's developed the least throughout the series because of his stubborn nature and it would be quite interesting to see whether or not him and Amy actually have a relationship or not. Howard and Bernadette are engaged now, but I have a feeling that Howard's mother is going to have something to say about this. There will probably be friction between Howard and Bernadette and ultimately he will probably have to choose between Bernadette and his mother. Priya has moved back to India and hopefully that means she's now out of the picture, but you never know, as Leonard and Priya haven't technically broken up - though I don't see the long distance thing working out for them. I haven't really got a clue what's going to happen to Raj this series. His fear of women obviously means that he doesn't get a lot of action - though this does provide lots of comedy - so I doubt he'll be getting serious with anyone any time soon, we shall just have to wait and see.

What's going on with Penny and Raj?
Personally, I think this shows great and whilst the characters may all be intellectually superior, they are all socially awkward and this is great fun. As the show has progressed, we've seen the characters develop and learn how to interact with other, should I say 'normal', human beings, though still retaining their loveable and geeky selves. If you've never watched The Big Bang Theory before, then I highly recommend it! You don't really need to have watched the previous seasons of it to follow it which is great, and the only thing you'd need to know really is that once upon a time Penny and Leonard dated. Apart from that, everything else is clear I believe. If you're already a fan of The Big Bang Theory and you're wondering whether or not to watch this series- DO! It is still tremendously funny and will brighten up your day.

  1. Hear! Hear! Wonderful praise for a fabulous series! I took some convincing to give it a try 2 years ago (am not the biggest comedy fan around), and have been an avid viewer ever since! Laughs all around! :o)
