Camelot.

Camelot is a new romantic adventure series coming to your TV screens soon. A special preview of the pilo episode was aired on the 25th of March but the official premiere is set as the 1st of March. This series will first air in America on Starz TV channel despite the fact that the actors and the story are both British. Channel 4 has bought the rights to this series and it will air in the UK later in 2011. No doubt many comparisons will be drawn between 'Camelot' and BBC's Merlin, but just from watching the first 5 minutes of this new series, one can tell that 'Camelot' is set to be a lot darker and more serious that the comical 'Merlin'. There are some explicit sexual scenes so this is not one for those easily offended by such things. The plot has been changed in 'Camelot' as Arthur is a young man who has been brought up as a commoner, not a king, and Morgan, Arthur's half-sister is Uther's only known child. Arthur must learn to be a King and a leader very quickly as he tries to settle the Kingdom as havoc breaks out after his father's death. His half-sister is his rival to the throne and she will use all sorts of treacherous means to make the Kingdom her own. So far, there has been no indication as to who Arthur will fall in love with, as he undoubtedly will, but I'm sure we'll find out soon. If you're in the USA, look out for 'Camelot' on TV next week, but if you're in the UK, you'll have to wait a bit longer as the UK premier date has not yet been set.

  3. I've seen the first 3 episodes, not bad!

The difference you mention with respect to Merlin, i.e. Arthur being raised a commoner, is in line with the traditional Arthurian tales in which Arthur was fostered away from court either to protect him or keep him away from Uther who was hoping for a more "legitimate" son (depending on the legend). It differs from the legends in the same way Merlin does in that both of them have Morgana has Arthur's half sister... but with Uther as the father instead of Ygraine as their mother!!!

You can't really compare this series to Merlin. Despite both being Arthurian tales, they're two completely different cups of tea and should be judged separately. Whether you prefer one or the other will be a matter of personal taste... although I would say that the writing and acting in Merlin is better.
