2012: Upcoming Films

2012: Upcoming Films.

So here we are, 2012 is finally here, and since the world hasn't ended, let's have a look at this year's upcoming movies. This is just a list of movies that I'm most excited about, of course there are hundreds of other films being released, but these are the big dogs.

1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

After the hugely successful transition of Lord of the Rings from book to Screen, I've got extremely high expectations for Tolkein's other book, 'The Hobbit'. However, the wait is long as the first half of this two-part film doesn't hit screens until the very end of 2012 - but be patient, it's going to be worth it!

Synopsis: Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

Directed by: Peter Jackson
Starring: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis
Release Date: 14.12.12

2. The Avengers

There have been far too many superhero movies recently, though I'm hoping that a combination of all Marvel's superheroes will be something well worth watching.

Synopsis: Nick Fury and the international agency S.H.I.E.L.D. bring together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki & his various membered army.

Directed by: Joss Whedon
Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson
Release Date: 04.05.12

3. The Hunger Games

I absolutely loved the book 'The Hunger Games' and sincerely hope that they've translated this brilliantly thought out plot line to screen well. This is definitely one of my favourite novels and if you haven't already read it then you definitely should!

Synopsis: Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match.

Directed by: Gary Ross
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks
Release Date: 23.03.12

4. The Amazing Spider-Man

Initially, I was quite annoyed to find out that the remake of my favourite super-hero movie was to be done without Tobey Maguire. However, as time has gone on, I've come around to Andy Garfield and decided that he's a talented actor, and whilst a bit weedy for the role of this superhero, he'll do nicely.

Synopsis: Teenager Peter Parker grapples with both human problems and amazing super-human crises.

Directed by: Marc Webb
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan
Release Date: 04.07.12

5. Skyfall

I was slightly disappointed after the last James Bond movie, so I sincerely hope that Skyfall meets up to expectations and puts Bond back on track. The inclusion of Ralph Fiennes to that cast is also sure to make an impact.

Synopsis: Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

Directed by: Sam Mendes
Starring: Daniel Craig, Helen McCrory, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes
Release Date: 26.10.12

6. Underworld: Awakening

The Underworld series with it's no-nonsense vampire/lycan rivalry should come back to bite Twilight in the behind and remind audiences of what vampires are really like.

Synopsis: When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene leads the battle against humankind.

Directed by: MÃ¥ns MÃ¥rlind, Björn Stein
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Michael Ealy, India Eisley, Charles Dance
Release Date: 20.01.12

7. Prometheus

This looks set out to be a very interesting story combining both the past and the future of the human race.

Synopsis: A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Directed by: Ridley Scott
Starring: Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Idris Elba
Release Date: 01.06.12

8.  The Woman In Black

I've heard that the theatre production of this is absolutely terrifying and as a big horror movie fan I'm intrigued to see how this play turns out on screen. It will also be interesting to see Daniel Radcliffe in a completely different genre to Harry Potter, but I have a feeling that he'll be brilliant.

Synopsis: A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.

Directed by: James Watkins
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey
Release Date: 10.02.12

9. Snow White and the Huntsman

So 2011 was the year of superheroes and it looks like 2012 is all set up for fairy tales with not one but two adaptions of Snow White being released. I am absolutely enchanted by the teaser trailer and it looks like exactly the sort of movie I'd like. This version of snow white looks hardcore and slightly gothic with some scenes reminding me of Lord of the Rings. Definitely one of the movies I'm most excited for!

Synopsis: The queen learns that Snow White is to become the Fairest in the land. However, if she consumes Snow White's heart then she will live forever. The Queen recruits a Huntsman; however, he takes pity on Snow White and she starts a rebellion to bring down Ravenna.

Directed by: Rupert Sanders
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane
Release Date: 01.06.12

10. Mirror Mirror

... The second of the snow white adaptions and to be honest, it just looks like a bit of joke. This is defined as a 'comedy fantasy', but to be honest, I don't like the sound of the classic Snow White being made a mockery of. Anticipating this film's premiere, but not too happy about it.

Synopsis: An enchantress schemes for the attention of a prince. When Snow White's beauty wins the heart of the prince that she desperately pursues, the Queen banishes her. Rescued by a band of highway robbers, Snow White grows into an indomitable young woman determined to take back her realm from the treacherous Queen.

Directed by: Tarsem Singh
Starring: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, and Sean Bean
Release Date: 16.03.12

Of course, there are many many other movies being released in 2012, some of which may be unheard of at this point in time and may surprise us all in the coming year. Some of the movies listed here may disappoint, either way, it looks like it's going to be an exciting year of cinema so .. keep watching!

P.S. Wishing all my followers a very Happy New Year!
